Your Writing Process
How do you go about starting a new novel?
I have an idea, but I don’t outline or plot out the chapters. The story evolves as I write and the characters tell me who they want to be and what they want to do.
Where do you like to write?
Cafes, bars, in bed, on the train… when the inspiration strikes, it’s hard not to write. Recently, I woke up in the middle of the night with a fully-formed poem in my head.
What do you like most about writing?
I think it allows me to see the world as different people might, and this allows for greater empathy and sympathy in real life.
What do you find stops you from writing more?
Time, mostly, but sometimes when I feel stuck, I find distractions to avoid writing. Rejections can also be hard on your confidence.
What genres do you like to write and why?
Almost exclusively literary fiction, because that is what I like to read myself. I’ve tried my hand at poetry, but I’m not sure I’m any good at it.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to aspiring writers?
Don’t give up. It is hard, it is solitary, but it is a gift. You are creating beauty in a world that is so troubled and could use more of it.

Lastly, what is your favourite thing about being an author?
