About The Author

Tell us more about you.

I’ve had a fairly wild career path at this point in life. Currently, my day job is being a professional poker player. No, I’ve never been on TV, but it pays the bills.

What are the three items you’d take on a deserted island?

  • A machete
  • A bowl to cook in
  • Ozzy from Survivor (ok, ok, you said deserted, so I’ll take some matches instead)

Who is your biggest role model?

Truthfully, I don’t really have one. I consume a lot of info from a lot of people from a lot of fields, and it’s shaped my worldview. But it’s small pieces. I try to keep an open mind to new ideas from everyone I meet.

What is your favourite book and who is your favourite author?

I’m going to take the cop-out answer and say I don’t have a favorite book. I’ll read just about anything that has a compelling story, and I love diving into a new world.

As far as my favorite author, that would probably be Harlan Coben. I started reading his stories in high school and have read his entire backlist.

Do you prefer e-books, physical books or audiobook?

Physical books for sure. It’s so much easier for me to fall into the story when I’m flipping pages.

Is writing your full-time profession or a hobby?

Definitely hobby. But who knows where we’ll be in five years? Never say never, I guess.

What social media platform do you like and use the most?

I rarely use social media on a personal level (hello, addiction and doom scrolling). But I’ve enjoyed using Instagram and Threads since I’ve started trying to promote The Way We Swing. Links to my socials:

Your Writing Process

How do you go about starting a new novel?

I usually have 2-3 scenes that immediate jump into my head. From there, I get to know the characters and figure out a coherent timeline. I try to plot after having 6-7 chapters done, but sometimes the characters argue with me and I have to pivot.

Where do you like to write?

Because of the whole poker career thing, I have good desktop setup, so I mostly work from home..

What do you like most about writing?

I love the storytelling aspect.

What do you find stops you from writing more?

Not enough hours in the day, mainly. I still have a job to do and I try to have a social life. It’s a balance because I can effectively set my schedule for poker, and unfortunately I grind a lot. It takes away from writing.

What genres do you like to write and why?

I’m currently writing YA, for a couple of reasons. Mainly, I want to write the stories I wish I’d read when I was growing up that I simply didn’t have access to.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to aspiring writers?

Oh, I’m not nearly at the point where I should be giving any advice. I guess the only thing I’d say would be to “just write.” Everything else can come after that.

Showcase Your Book!

How many books have you written and if more than one, what’s your favourite?

My first book, The Way We Swing, is coming out June 1st!

The sequel, The Way We Swing Back, is currently in my editors’/cover artists’ hands and will be released sometime in August or September.

The last book in the series, The Way We Answer, is 98% done and will be released sometime between October and December of this year. I have to send it off to my second batch of beta readers, but I’m very happy with how the story ended.

I also have about 40% of a fourth book done, which will be another YA sports-themed book. That one will be basketball. But we’re a long way from a release day.

I’m not sure if I’m supposed to admit to my favorite, because it sort of feels like admitting to a favorite child, but The Way We Swing Back is number one, and it’s probably not close. The POV switches from Tanner to Easton in the sequel, and I love Easton as a character. I knew so many young gay kids growing up who fit his mold, and I realized pretty early on that he was the most complex character in my universe.

How long did x take you to write?

Great question. I started the story back in 2018? 2019? I never planned to have it published. It sat for years on the shelf and I had to no idea how I wanted to end it. I really had four options, and I struggled hard.

I sent a couple different versions to beta readers and realized I didn’t have an actual story. It got ripped to shreds. So it again sat collecting dust until late 2024.

I ended up having a finalized product around the middle of last year, and then it took me like a month to write the sequel? And another six weeks to write the last book in the trilogy? I already knew the characters so well, that once I figured out the plot, the rest was easy.

Lastly, what is your favourite thing about being an author?

I’ve loved diving into characters. What makes them tick? What’s important to them? What do they do under pressure? It’s fun to work through.
