About The Author

Tell us more about you.

I live in a salvaged/previously abandoned shack and love renovation. My silly fact is, I taught myself German to fluency because I love a song the normal amount.

What are the three items you’d take on a deserted island?

I’m going to need to know a little more about the island. Are we in Alaska or the tropics? Do I have an escape plan, or am I stuck there? Okay: sun protection, snacks, water purifier.

Who is your biggest role model?

Okay, I’m not saying I’m like him, but I aspire to have qualities like Mr. Rogers.

What is your favourite book and who is your favourite author?

There are too many. Two authors who helped me on my journey are Nalo Hopkinson and Lillian Csernica.

Do you prefer e-books, physical books or audiobook?

Since figuring out how to adjust the display on my ereader, I’m loving ebooks. Audio, I tend to zone out too hard.

Is writing your full-time profession or a hobby?

Writing is my full-time job, but I’m also disabled.

What social media platform do you like and use the most?

Your Writing Process

How do you go about starting a new novel?

This completely depends on the project. One book, I panic wrote in 54 days. Another took 20 years of puzzling to finally happen.

Where do you like to write?

At home, but I’m slowly renovating an office to do my creative work in, so that’s exciting!

What do you like most about writing?

Getting to know characters, watching them grow, change, and defy me.

What do you find stops you from writing more?

Physical pain and exhaustion. (I live with an autoimmune disease, hEDS, and endometriosis)

What genres do you like to write and why?

I love to experiment! My primary genres are fantasy, horror, and nonfiction, but I’ve tried romance, tragedy, western, sci-fi, and thriller. My goal is to someday write a Choose Your Own Adventure style story.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to aspiring writers?

Get an account on Duotrope. I swear, I spun my wheels for YEARS trying to find publishing opportunities. And build community with other authors. Authors are your peers, not your competition. The most help I’ve gotten in this industry has been from fellow authors.

Showcase Your Book!

How many books have you written and if more than one, what’s your favourite?

I’ve written two so far (three dropping next year!). I’ve had many short story publications at this point and I’m especially proud of getting a story into the Hope is Not Passive benefit anthology. But for my solo projects, the Duskingr Saga is my pride and joy (from Quills and Cosmos Press. Book 2 dropping 2027).

How long did The Ice Moved for No One take you to write?

The Ice Moved for No One was the book I panic wrote in 54 days. I then spent about a year reworking it with my amazing editor.

Lastly, what is your favourite thing about being an author?

I have a powerful drive to write stories. So, the writing is my favorite part. I love it when elements that have been giving me trouble click into place.
