Q&A with Beckett Krane – Author Interview

About The Author

Tell us more about you.

I was born and raised in the Midwest on a farm and spent most of my days running wild with my imagination. All of which fueled my creative journey at a very early age.

What are the three items you’d take on a deserted island?

My dog (even though she’d be useless), my sandals (leave me and my Teva Tan alone), and my hammock (if I’m going to spend my last days on an island I want to be comfy).

Who is your biggest role model?

In the bookish space, Tonja K. Johnson is such an inspiration to me. Her writing is incredible, she handles herself with such grace, and she refuses to give up until she reaches her goals.

What is your favourite book and who is your favourite author?

Surprisingly, there’s two different answers for this! My favorite book is A Bone in his Teeth by Kellen Graves. I felt so seen by Alba’s character, and how he navigated the beautiful, dark story. My favorite author has to be Mawce Hanlin. Every book I read from them feels like coming home, and their stories make the world so much brighter for me.

Do you prefer e-books, physical books or audiobook?

I read ebooks most often for ease of access, but I actually prefer hard copies when I can get my hands on them without going bankrupt!

Is writing your full-time profession or a hobby?

Very much a side hobby at the moment, but I try to run it like a business as much as I can! For my day job I work in a low-stress section of healthcare, where it’s mainly just me and thoughts (most involving monsterfcking and commentaries on religious trauma)

What social media platform do you like and use the most?

I love fucking around on Canva so I do love Instagram, but without Threads I wouldn’t have met so many other incredible authors and readers. Links to my socials:

Your Writing Process

How do you go about starting a new novel?

It usually starts with a playlist, as I heavily draw inspiration from music, and then from there I start plotting, and if I need to get really unhinged I write third-person short stories of me interviewing my characters (it works, don’t hate the process)

Where do you like to write?

At home at my desk or on the couch is where I like to write, but most often I write during breaks at work. I actually wrote “The End” in my debut novel right before I clocked out for the day, and then cried all the way home.

What do you like most about writing?

I love adding details and finally writing scenes that have existed out of focus in my head for so long.

What do you find stops you from writing more?

Distractions! Namely, that damn phone.

What genres do you like to write and why?

I will always write about romance. There’s something so special to me about crafting a relationship that’s messy and hard-won and they might never even say “I love you”, but you can feel it through the book. A genre I’m edging into more—especially with my upcoming release Endangered—is horror, and I’m very much entertaining the idea of leaning more into the Horror Romance genre with additional future works.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to aspiring writers?

Finish. The. Book. First. Take things one day at a time, finish the book, then worry about editing, or querying, or ARC readers, and everything else in between. Finish. The. Book. First.

Showcase Your Book!

How many books have you written and if more than one, what’s your favourite?

Chapel at Ender’s Ridge is my Western Romance debut novel I released last August, and Endangered is my Horror Romance novella releasing July 21st! Endangered was so experimental and wildly fun to write, but Chapel will always have my heart. I don’t think I’ll ever get over the reluctant vampire and his preacher next door.

How long did Chapel at Ender’s Ridge take you to write?

Chapel took around four months to finish draft one (of many), and Endangered took about one month to transform it from a short story to the first draft of the novella it’s now being published as.

Lastly, what is your favourite thing about being an author?

Honestly, my favorite thing would be a tie between readers feeling understood by my work—especially the exploration of religious trauma in Chapel—and creating a book that feels real, like my characters already existed and I just entered their world to share their story.
