Jay’s Gay Agenda Book Review

We’re back with another book review, and if I’m honest, Jay’s Gay Agenda has been on my TBR list for way too long. I finally got around to reading it, and I’m so glad that I did. I love pretty much everything about this book, the twists and turns, and a really good plot. At first, I thought I knew how it was going to end, but I was very wrong about that!

If you’ve read Jay’s Gay Agenda then this Jay’s Gay Agenda book review won’t be much help but if you haven’t you should give it a read to find out if you like it or not!

Any spoilers will be marked in italics so if you’ve not read Jay’s Gay Agenda, avoid them at all costs!

Jay’s Gay Agenda Synopsis

Jay Collier knows he’s a rarity—the only out gay kid in his small Washington town. While his friends talk about their relationships, Jay can only dream of his own, keeping a “Gay Agenda” of firsts he hopes to experience.

Everything changes when his family moves to Seattle, where he starts at a new school with a vibrant LGBTQIA+ community. Finally, Jay feels at home. But as he begins checking off items from his list, he finds himself torn between his heart, and his desires, and balancing old friends with new ones—because love doesn’t always follow a plan.

Overall Rating – 3.5

Want to find out why I gave it the rating that I did. Take a look below to see what I thought about all aspects of the book. I leave the spice factor out of the rating because some books have spice and other’s don’t.

Let me know if you think I was a little too critical in this Jay’s Gay Agenda Review. I personally think it’s a good book, that being said I also don’t think it’s as good as some of the others that I’ve read and after breaking it down into sections it gets a 3.5 star, which is still a pretty good rating.

Jay’s Gay Agenda Plot – 4

The plot was good, if a little messy at times. I found myself having to read back a couple of times. Overall, it did flow and was an easy read for dyslexics, as long as you can follow complex yet simple storylines, it’s a weird one.

I did feel, however, that some parts of the novel were a little silly. I understand Jay wanted to lose his virginity and it was a big deal for him, so why did he lose it with Tony and not someone he liked a little more than just a “hook up!” That bit may have wound me up a bit, there are a few “plot holes” in my opinion but overall it wasn’t too bad.

Jay’s Gay Agenda Characters – 3.8

Where to start? I had issues with some of the characters in the book but overall they were fine. Jay’s path to discovery helped him build as a character. I hated Albert, I know we’re supposed to like him but I really couldn’t get into him at all, sorry not sorry.

I also thought Lu was a little hit-and-miss. I liked her to start and then when Jay moved away I felt her story either wasn’t given enough light or she was just a little bit of a bitch. Again probably controversial but that’s my opinion. Lastly, Tony is a douche.

Jay’s Gay Agenda Emotional Factor – 3.5

Did I cry? Not really. However, I did find some of the scenes to be “awww” worthy and it made me happy during some chapters so equally I feel like Jay’s Gay Agenda had the emotion, it’s just a different type of emotion to what I normally read.

Jay’s Gay Agenda Ending – 3

So corny, so cheesy and a little anti-climatic if I’m being totally honest. I am not a fan of endings, they’re either done with grace and they knock it out of the park or they can be a total miss and and Jay’s Gay Agenda was in the middle for me.

Yes, it’s a cutesy ending but after all of the hype and build-up around going to the dance with the guy he likes and then bam dropping it all in an instant, it just didn’t feel like what would have actually happened. That being said I also know it’s supposed to be all cute and friendship first so I get that.

Jay’s Gay Agenda Spice – 1

If you’re looking for a spicy book, this one isn’t it. There isn’t any naughty spice in the pages of this novel which is why I gave it a big 1 out of 5! However, there were some scenes like when Jay lost his virginity that were borderline spicy.
