About The Author

Tell us more about you.

I grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, but now live on the Central Coast of California. Think The Sideways movie. Wife, 3 kids, 2 dogs, 1 chinchilla.

Lived in Seattle for 12 years. I started my writing career as a playwright

What are the three items you’d take on a deserted island?

All of Aimee Mann’s albums, a lot of paper and a lot of pencils.

Who is your biggest role model?

I don’t really have a role model at this age. I have some good friends that I admire how their lives have turned out.

What is your favourite book and who is your favourite author?

Lanford Wilson is my favorite writer. He’s a playwright. I like Tennessee Williams. At the moment I’m really enjoying reading Rachel Kushner’s books.

Do you prefer e-books, physical books or audiobook?

I’m starting to like ebooks more, but a good paperback is always good. I only listen to non-fiction for audiobooks.

Is writing your full-time profession or a hobby?

Writing is my full time job.

Your Writing Process

How do you go about starting a new novel?

My process is different for each book I write. I try to write 2000 words a day, or 10,000 a week when I’m going through my first draft. Then the process slows down for the remaining drafts.

Where do you like to write?

I have an office where I write.

What do you like most about writing?

Following the characters when they are on a roll and making discoveries that I didn’t know were there.

What do you find stops you from writing more?

Health, wanting to spend more time with my kids.

What genres do you like to write and why?

I write what I call cinematic fiction.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to aspiring writers?

You have to be disciplined and get your butt in the chair and if your characters aren’t talking to you, check in with their other senses. What are they seeing, tasting, touching, hearing, smelling. They will start talking when they want to.

Creating worlds and characters that I love.
