  • Personally – My Brother and Sister
  • Professionally – Marie Curie
  • Comedically – Billy Connolly

What is your favourite book and who is your favourite author?

Do you prefer e-books, physical books or audiobooks?

Is writing your full-time profession or a hobby?

A hobby. I started when I retired from a 30-year career in Corporate Research and Development.

What social media platform do you like and use the most?

My social channels are:

Your Writing Process

How do you go about starting a new novel?

Plan. A lot. Come up with a “Blockbuster Idea” (20 words), “Killer Logline” Few Short Paragraphs, Plot Outline (A few pages) and Character Bios (1 page each).

Where do you like to write?

At home, quietly in the evening, sometimes late into the night.

What do you like most about writing?

The challenge of coming up with a 100,000+ word story that has a really satisfying ending and keeps the reader interested all along (hopefully).

What do you find stops you from writing more?

An inability to come up with some truly imaginative, original and compelling plots. Many Spy Thrillers have been written, it’s hard to come up with a fresh take.

What genres do you like to write and why?

My first two books have been Spy Thrillers and my 3rd (yet to be published) will complete the “Spies at All Times” trilogy. I’m interested in Detective Stories, Murder Mysteries and Adventures, but also read Fantasy Novels, Science Fiction and Non-fiction.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to aspiring writers?

Don’t give up! Writing is hard. Getting your material published even harder (if you go through the Trad route), and it can get expensive. So, stay true to your purpose (for writing in the first place) and don’t overthink the first draft.

Showcase your books!

How many books have you written and if more than one, what’s your favourite?

Two with a third ready to go. I just need to complete the formatting and see the Author Copies.

How long did Spies in their Mandela’s time write?

Just over a year (part time).

Lastly, what is your favourite thing about being an author?

Seeing the finished product and being satisfied with the quality of the story. My purpose was to try something I had never done; never thought I could do and get it to the finish line (with the aid of an excellent editor). It’s a wonderful challenge
