About The Author

Tell us more about you

I am writer based in Los Angeles. I’ve written for sitcoms on TV, independent films, and national publications, including a story I wrote for Bon Appetit which was named to Best American Food Writing in 2023. “Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant” is my first book. I am a proud graduate of the University of Michigan and I like cats. 

What are the three items you’d take on a deserted island?

My laptop, a blanket, and a box of matches.

Who is your biggest role model?

Don’t have one.

What is your favourite book and who is your favourite author?

Too many to mention.

Do you prefer e-books, physical books or audiobooks?

Physical books.

Is writing your full-time profession or a hobby?

Yes. Though I work in multiple genres. Right now, I am finishing a film for PBS and working on my next memoir. 

What social media platform do you like and use the most?

I’m mostly active on Instagram, but you can also find me on other socials too.

Your Writing Process

How do you go about starting a new novel?

With my first book, I just started writing stories. For my second, I paid a lot more attention to the outline.

Where do you like to write?

I love a good café on a busy corner so I can people-watch. 

What do you like most about writing?

I began writing as a poet, so I’m still inspired by the sounds of words bouncing in my head.

What do you find stops you from writing more?

Nothing.

What genres do you like to write and why?

I work in multiple genres. They each have their own unique joys.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to aspiring writers?

In these creative careers, you’re going to hear the word “no,” a lot. Just don’t let it be your own.

I have only written one book.

How long did Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant take to write?

It took me five years to write and sell the book. 

Lastly, what is your favourite thing about being an author?

I love meeting readers. Since the book’s release, I have done over 300 in-person readings from Korea to Germany. In May, I will be doing another 20 events in Europe including Oxford University, Imperial College London, and more.
