About The Author
Tell us more about you
I have been an uber-geek my whole life, living in a mental world of science fiction and fantasy. I was obsessed with Star Wars since our neighbours got the first action figures when I was four. My favourite colour is blue, or the combo of hot pink and black.
What are the three items you’d take on a deserted island?
I’m going to assume food and water aren’t a concern, so first, a companion. It would be an ideal situation to find out how long Clevenger can put up with me! Second would be a suitcase filled with blank notebooks and pens. I couldn’t live without being able to put my ideas down on paper. And third? Probably one of my polar bear plushies, to keep me warm at night.
Who is your biggest role model?
It’s going to sound sappy, but Clevenger. I watch all the work he is able to put into our books. He’s doing the developmental editing, book covers, interior art, formatting, and technical aspects of publishing. He’s the one arranging all the events and things like this interview here. Plus he takes the time to keep me motivated and positive, all while working a full time job, and being a full time father and husband!
What is your favourite book and who is your favourite author?
Oh, goodness. Asking for a favourite book is like asking for a favourite movie. It changes over time, plus you have to throw in that I am a mood reader. I used to have a favourite, but it fell out of that position due to some unfortunate atrocities by the author. If I had to pick a baby, I would have to say Poppy Brite or Wendy Pini. I love the characters and atmosphere they create in their stories.
Do you prefer e-books, physical books or audiobooks?
Oh, goodness. The old argument! In my mind, these are tools in your life to enjoy stories. They each have their pros and cons, and they are all valid options. E-books are great for travel, audiobooks are excellent for making road trips pass in the blink of an eye.
Is writing your full-time profession or a hobby?
Right now, I am three years into the process of applying for Disability, so surviving is my full-time job. I struggle with mental health issues, and I write whenever my brain allows!
What social media platform do you like and use the most?
I am all about Threads! I am more about text posts, rather than sharing images. I tried Twitter but got nowhere, and I haven’t had much luck with BlueSky. I used to be on Tumblr, but that was definitely more for doomscrolling!

Your Writing Process
How do you go about starting a new novel?
For me, it almost always starts with the characters, and I have to find something mean to do to them. I get my worlds from some aspect of media that I want to put a spin on. Plot I pull from the necessity of having something for my characters to do. But it always starts with having an interesting character in mind.
Where do you like to write?
I think that is a big part of my problem currently. I have no real writing location available. Someone needs to adopt me and chain me to a writing desk!
What do you like most about writing?
I like being able to share the stories that are in my head. Reading has always been able to let me escape into other worlds, and I like being able to offer that to others. It’s why fantasy and science fiction have always appealed to me.
What do you find stops you from writing more?
My own mental health. There’s no need to go into the hows and whys, but we as a global society really need to take mental health more seriously, with treatment, preventative maintenance, and open, non-judgmental communication on the topic.
What genres do you like to write and why?
Ouch, can I just answer, “Yes”? Haha. But really, fantasy is going to be at the top of my list of genres, with my favourite sub-genres being coming-of-age and Gothic.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to aspiring writers?
Find what process works for YOU. Experiment to find what that might be. Also, write what YOU enjoy reading because you are going to end up reading it a LOT.

Showcase your books!
How many books have you written and if more than one, what’s your favourite?
We have written the four books of the Manticore’s Shadow series together already. In addition, I have written three rough drafts for solo books on the side. War of Night is always going to have a special place for me, not just because it was our first to be published, but because of why it was even started. Clevenger and I used it as an excuse to talk more, and to strengthen our friendship, when I was in a pretty dark place.
How long did War of Night: The Manticore’s Shadow take to write?
From planning to completion of the rough draft, it probably took 18 months, plus about another year of dead time jammed in the middle. So two and a half years, roughly.
Lastly, what is your favourite thing about being an author?
I absolutely love sharing my world-building. Writing novels just happens to be my latest method of over-explaining the worlds that live in my head! My dream is to read fan fiction written in one of the environments from one of my books.
