About The Author
Tell us more about you
I grew up in Plymouth, England, where I’ve lived almost all my life. The only exception was my three years at Uni, when I lived in Winchester. My favourite colour is red. And a fun fact about me is that I once jumped off Plympton Castle and fractured my ankle.
What are the three items you’d take on a deserted island?
Old Bear, since he’s been with me since I was seven. My laptop can’t go a day without writing. My gerbil (and her enclosure), it’s less an item and more so she can spend the last of her days being looked after.
Who is your biggest role model?
I’m not sure I have one.
What is your favourite book and who is your favourite author?
My favourite book us usually whatever I’m reading at that moment. Although there are a few titles I’ve gone back to multiple times. My favourite author, right now, is probably Kelly Miller, since I’ve read all of her books, and I can’t say that about any other author.
Do you prefer e-books, physical books or audiobooks?
E-books, using a text reader.
Is writing your full-time profession or a hobby?
My full-time job currently is working as a training manager in a fast-food restaurant. Writing is more than just a hobby, I’d like it to be my full-time job. Just not sure how to get myself there.
What social media platform do you like and use the most?
Currently, I’m using WordPress more than any other platform, although I have profiles on Facebook, Threads, Instagram and TikTok.

Your Writing Process
How do you go about starting a new novel?
Usually the idea for my next project forms during the writing of my current one. So I’ll have mentally worked on it for a little while before starting. But I would definitely say it’s more of a jump-right-in process. I’ll make notes as I write, but I don’t really plan. The editing process is where I’ll smooth off the edges and make more fixed decisions about things.
Where do you like to write?
I write first thing in the morning, regardless of whether or not I’m working. I write every day. I write stood up doing steps, as the motion helps the thinking process – I wander around a lot when I’m writing. Previously this was in our kitchen, using the kitchen side, but since moving to our temporary accommodation, this is now done in the living room, at my partner’s desk.
What do you like most about writing?
I like getting to know my characters, learning about their stories, and the relationships they build.
What do you find stops you from writing more?
Very little. I write every day. Since my first year at uni there was only ever one day where I didn’t do any writing. So that’s twenty-ish years of daily writing. I think writing every day allows me to feel like I’m always making progress, regardless to whether it’s a few lines or a few pages.
What genres do you like to write and why?
I’ve always been geared more towards fantasy writing, with a character focus. For the last few years that’s led to me writing exclusively magical realism, slice of life style narratives.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to aspiring writers?
Just get what you want to write about down on paper. Just write. Don’t worry if it’s any good. This is just your first draft. Your first draft doesn’t need to be perfect, that’s what editing and rewrites are for.

Showcase your books!
How many books have you written and if more than one, what’s your favourite?
I’ve lost count of how many books I’ve written, however I currently have ten active titles published with KDP, and two retired titles, published through other POD publishers. As for my favourite… that’s a tough one. I tend to get very invested in the projects I’m working on, and I think I have more favourite scenes and moments than anything.
How long did Toby (What Makes Me) take to write?
Nineteen days. This was the first title I started during the first lockdown. I started it after finishing writing We Giants. Since I had the time, I wrote a chapter a day, every day, until it was finished. All the books in the What Makes Me Series were done the same way. So it took about 76 days to write the whole series. But writing is only part of the story. I spent about a year on edits and rewrites for the whole series, before publishing.
Lastly, what is your favourite thing about being an author?
Getting to be the first one to get to know my characters and the story they want to tell.
