Snow Boys Synopsis

Dean O’Donnell is a quiet observer with a secret and a voice that could stop anyone in their tracks. Content to stay out of the spotlight at his high school, his carefully guarded world is upended when he’s chosen for a major solo in the Christmas choir performance. To make matters more complicated, a Secret Santa gift sparks an unexpected connection, pushing Dean out of his comfort zone.

Ben Hunter is the friendly boy next door, popular but quietly struggling. Caught between growing feelings for Dean and a family crisis threatening to overwhelm him, Ben takes a job at the local cinema to make ends meet. Juggling work, school, and his family’s financial troubles leaves him on the edge of burnout—but his heart has other priorities.

As the holiday season unfolds, so do their unspoken emotions. But with Dean battling anxiety and Ben’s life spiralling into chaos, their differences feel like insurmountable barriers. Will they find the courage to face their challenges together, or will this winter become a story of missed chances and lingering what-ifs?

Snow Boys Book Review Overall Rating – 4.3/5

I really enjoyed this book. It was a true to heart, Christmas book with all the festive fun you could want. I related to parts of this book, I cried a lot and my heart stopped at several parts when it go so good, so cute!

Let me know what you thought about Snow Boys by Simon Doyle, did you love it? Hate it? Let me know what you think about my review, was I too nice? Too harsh? or spot on the mark?

Snow Boys Plot – 4.5

The plot was easy to follow, well thought out and great for dyslexics. Despite it being a true Irish piece there weren’t many words that I couldn’t understand. I didn’t really find any plot holes either which is always a nice surprise as I’ve found that some overhyped books have terrible plot holes!

There were a couple of things that I was a little meh about, the two Alex’s so one was always Alex Janey which kind of sucked a little. Also I felt like towards the start of the book Simon explained the distance, and then as the book went on they seemed to travel at the speed of light. Also, as someone who was outed myself, I loved Bens story line and how they turned it and loved themselves.

Snow Boys Characters – 4

Personally, I thought that most of the characters were really well-written. You could tell who was who and they were all given their own little story so you could connect with them better. Although a lot of them were hit and miss and you either loved them or hated them there was no inbetween.

I feel like Erin was supposed to be a lovable character but I hated her. Like I said you either hated or loved them and towards the end I found I was hating more than I loved. I also wasn’t the biggest fan of Deans dad. Ben was by far my favourite.

Snow Boys Emotional Rating – 5

I cried, I cheered, my heart stopped when certain parts happened and the emotion was amazing. They hit right in the heart and when certain things happened the emotions hit right in the gut. If you love emotional reads then the Snow Boys book is one you have to read at Christmas!

Snow Boys Ending – 4

Endings can be hit or miss but I think Snow Boys ending was really good. I did have a few unanswered questions though which you can find below but they are spoilers but overall it was a strong ending.

One huge question we didn’t get an answer for was who leaked that video. I know the book Snow Boys didn’t really focus on the who but I really wanted to know and I had my suspicions such as Erin.

Snow Boys Spice – 1

I don’t include spice in the overall rating because some books have spice and some don’t but if I had to rate the spice in Snow Boys, I would give it a one. It was more suggestive and naughty thoughts rather than anything happening which was totally fine and it worked well throughout the book.
