The Geography Club Film Review
I love to read but I also love to watch gay films and The Geography Club is one of the first gay films that I watched as a teenager many, many years ago. It’s also one of the first books I read as well and I love a good book which gets turned into a decent film at the same time.
If you’ve not watched The Geography Club, I would advise some ice cream and tissues and to be ready for some good acting and some very cringe-worthy acting at the same time. There’s something about cringe-worthy acting that I just love, along with low-budget films.
If you want to avoid spoilers they will be marked in italics so keep an eye out for that.
The Geography Club Synopsis
The Geography Club is a coming-of-age film based on Brent Hartinger’s novel of the same name. It follows Russell Middlebrook, a high school junior who is grappling with his sexual identity in a world that feels both isolating and judgmental. When he meets Kevin, a popular athlete, the two begin a secret relationship. Both fear rejection and judgment, and they keep their relationship hidden from their peers and family.
As Russell’s friendships grow more complex, he discovers a group of other students who are also struggling with their identities and self-acceptance. They form a club under the pretence of studying geography, using it as a safe space to share their experiences, fears, and hopes without fear of judgment. The “Geography Club” becomes a sanctuary where the students can truly be themselves.
The film explores themes of acceptance, identity, and the challenges of finding belonging in high school. It’s a heartfelt and often humorous portrayal of LGBTQ+ teens navigating the complex journey to self-acceptance, while highlighting the importance of friendship and support.

The Geography Club Film Rating – 4.25/5
Here’s my overall rating of the film The Geography Club. I thought it was really good despite some of the cringe acting and some of the choices made throughout the film. It was easy to follow and had some heartwarming feel good moments and some not so feel good moments.
Let me know what you thought about the film The Geography Club. Do you agree with my rating or think I’m way off mark.
The Geography Club Plot – 4/5
I really liked the plot. I found it super easy to follow, engaging and it didn’t have me bored and looking through Instagram. I will say the ending was both good and bad at the same time but it’s still worth watching.
I found the ending to be a little naff. I loved that they all found their group, their community. However, I get really bored seeing so many gay films that don’t have that overall happy ending. We want to see the guy get his guy at the end but a large portion of films, just like this one, don’t have that.
The Geography Club Acting – 4.5/5
The acting was actually quite good considering it seemed very low budget. I will say that yes there were cringe moments however, it was engaging and well worth watching. The acting by far in The Geography Club film is better than some films I’ve seen.
Some of the acting was amazing and the way some of the cast delivered their lines were outstanding. I LOVED how one of the characters said he was 50% gay, then it kept creeping up in percentage and the way it was delivered made me chuckle each time. It’s lines and acting like this that make the film great and makes you want to watch it again and again.
The Geography Club Film Review
Hopefully you found this review helpful. I would urge everyone to give this film a watch. It’s a great coming of age queer tale that so many people in the LGBTQ+ community can agree with. Falling for the “straight” boy, finding others like yourself and facing the horrors that high school bullying represents.
If you want to watch this film I would say go for it. Let me know what you thought about it; hopefully, you’ll love it. Check out my Gay Film Directory for even more amazing gay film recommendations and film reviews!
